The Halton Newcomer Strategy is now accepting nominations for the Halton Newcomer Recognition Awards.The Halton Newcomer Strategy (HNS) annually recognizes immigrants who have provided significant contributions to the Halton community. The awards and the ceremony highlight and reflect what immigrants can achieve from settlement to establishing their lives in Halton. The Newcomer Recognition Awards create awareness about immigrants who live or work in Halton by recognizing their successes and contributions to our community. HNS welcomes and encourages nominations in the form of Halton Newcomer Success Stories. Stories can profile a wide range of individuals from various backgrounds, countries of origin, labour market sectors and occupations and who have had significant achievements in one of the following three categories: Business / Culturally Diverse Workforce: An immigrant who has achieved success in the development or operation of a business or entrepreneurial venture in Halton with a focus on providing a diverse work environment; Community: An immigrant who strengthens community awareness about and advocates for newcomer equity and the celebration of cultural diversity in Halton; Youth: An immigrant youth in secondary or post-secondary education who is dedicated to supporting immigrant integration and cultural awareness in Halton. If you would like to put forward a nominee please see the attached application form and submit to hns@halton.ca by Friday, March 25th at 4:00 pm.

The City of Waterloo is inviting experienced, professional artists or a team of professional artists to submit their qualifications for the opportunity to develop new public art work. The total all-inclusive budget for all components of this public art project is $16,000. As part of the City of Waterloo’s Public Art Policy, the piece will be installed as part of the Waterloo Service Centre expansion. City of Waterloo Service Centre is the home to the operations divisions responsible for roads, water & sewers, parks and fleet operations and will house the data centre of the Information Management Technology Services as well as the Emergency Control Centre for the city. Included on the property are administrative offices, workshop and storage areas, fleet maintenance and storage, winter salt storage building, and the future home of the Rainwater Harvesting Project. The city’s objective of the current redevelopment is to undertake a major upgrade to address issues of accessibility, maintenance requirements, space deficits, and to allow for future growth and expansion. The artist(s) selected for the project will be responsible for developing and implementing an artistic work for the City of Waterloo Service Centre. The ideal installation will blend function and form while also reflecting the use of the Waterloo Service Centre. Found objects from or representing the Waterloo Service Centre can be incorporated, but is not necessary. As with all pieces in the Public Art collection the goal of this project is to enhance current collection, connect citizens to the use and purpose of the building, and function as wayfinding or signature object to denote the way to/purpose of the Service Centre.Site Tour and Application Briefing: February 16, 2016, 2:30 p.m. at City of Waterloo Service Centre, 265 Lexington Court, Waterloo, Ontario, N2J 4A8. The 2016 Young Entrepreneurs, Make Your Pitch competition is now underway.  The competition challenges high school students in grades 9 to 12 to pitch their business ideas in a two-minute video.  Students must be a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant enrolled full-time in an Ontario high school in Grades 9-12.  The video submission deadline is March 23, 2016.  Online Voting for the best video pitches runs from March 28 to April 14, 2016.  Twenty finalists will receive a trip to Toronto (including transportation and hotel for the finalists and their chaperones) to present their ideas to a judging panel at the Ontario Centres of Excellence’s Discovery Conference in Toronto May 9 to 10, 2016. For more information on the program, competition details and highlights from last year, please visit. If you have any questions about Young Entrepreneurs, Make Your Pitch, please contact Ontario Centres of Excellence at (416) 861-1092 ext. 1049 or support@makeyourpitch.ca.
