The Mississauga Arts Council is shocked and saddened to learn of the sudden passing of an extraordinary leader and passionate community advocate, Jim Tovey, Mississauga’s Ward 1 Councillor since 2010.
“Jim Tovey was inspiring, his dedication and hard work gave the impression that almost anything was possible. His creative efforts to make this city a better place to live in will benefit all of us for years to come,” says MAC’s Executive Director, Mike Douglas.
A musician himself, Jim brought his creativity into all that he did. He spearheaded the groundbreaking Lakeview Legacy Project (now known as Inspiration Lakeview), which adopts the concepts of a community designed revitalization plan for Mississauga’s eastern waterfront. Inspiration Lakeview received two national awards for planning, and Jim was honoured by being chosen Mississauga Citizen of the Year for 2009. In 2012, Jim received the Queens Jubilee Medal for his work as a private citizen.
This is tragic for so many people in Mississauga South, in Lakeview, Port Credit, for his wonderful staff and most of all for his loving family. On behalf of the Mississauga Arts Council, we offer our deepest condolences to his wife Lee and family.
Jim will be truly missed by MAC’s Board of Directors, Staff, and everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.
