Stella Jurgen






Stella was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, from Portuguese and Italian roots.  In 1976 her family moved to Portugal where she completed her secondary studies.  With a brief introduction to Fine Arts from the “Escola Nacional das Belas Artes” in Lisbon, she was inspired to pursue her dream.  In 1986, she immigrated to Toronto, Canada with her family where she specialized in Graphic Design at George Brown College.

Her artistic talent was recognized with several awards since childhood through exhibits at numerous shows and galleries including: 1st price at Constructions in the Sand in Estoril hosted by Correio da Manhã in 1978, 1st prize with a collage by the Portuguese Consulate in Toronto entitled “Natal Português” in 1986, 1st prize “Best in Show” Mississauga Juried Arts Show in 1988.  And recently in 2017 Stella directed and produced an exhibition entitled “Reflections” held at the Consulate General of Portugal in Toronto.  This exhibition included a collection of paintings by the artist, photography by Kurt Jurgen and metal sculptures by Chris Banfalvi.  This event was featured on City-TV by “Gente da Nossa”, FPTV by “Jornal da Noite” and OMNI-TV “Nos Portugueses.  Also promoted by CHIN Radio “Notas Soltas. 50% of the proceeds of the sales of Stella’s paintings will be donated to Abrigo Centre to assist with programs and services for women and children victims of domestic violence.

In 2015 Stella held a solo exhibition entitled “Being Woman” (“Ser Mulher”) at the Casa do Alentejo, Galeria Alberto Castro in benefit of Abrigo Centre and many other collaborative exhibitions including,  “Art by the Lac”, “Celebration of Women” by the Women’s Health Network at the Bradly Museum and Living Arts Centre,  CAPIC Toronto Chapters Show at the OCAD Gallery, “Everything to do with Sex” at the Exhibition Place, “Fraternity Fest” at the Mississauga City Hall, “Carousel of Nations” Visual Arts Juried Exhibition at the Oakville Town Hall, “Valentine’s Show” at the Visual Arts Mississauga –“Soundscapes” by the Mississauga Choral Society Concert & Art Show.

Participant at two Art Battles in Mississauga and Burlington and featured painting entertainer at the Luxury Chocolate Show 2016.

Commissioned artist for the production of a fine arts collection of six paintings 4ft x 6ft acrylic on canvas for Perspective Condominiums in Etobicoke, Ontario public spaces entitled “Natural Perspective”.  The collection is inspired by the architecture and natural surroundings of the buildings by Pianosi Development Corporation.

Having worked as Senior Designer with top agencies, Stella was motivated by her entrepreneurial spirit and in 1998 she founded 17 Designs, a Graphic Design & Websites company that received the Mississauga Enterprise Centre Emerging Business Award in 2001.  17 Designs was initially located in Mississauga and now is based in Oakville, Ontario.  Serving clients from the GTA, Halton and Peel Region, 17 Designs offers a wide range of services including Graphic Design, Websites, Marketing and Branding for various industries.  Stella Jurgen is the designer of the Manchu Wok logo, Polaris Transportation, BIOSAK compostable Bags, among other well-known brands.

Stella is also a Jazz vocalist mainly with Jazz Plazma. The quartet has performed for numerous events such as Art Opening celebrations at the General Consultate of Portugal, “Arts of the Credit” with the Mayor of Mississauga and “Simply Colour and Form” at the Holcim Art Gallery in Milton.  Fundraiser events at the “Benares Historic House Museum History & Hats” and “Friends of the Mississauga Museum”. Dinner/show style “New York Dinner Club” at the Living Arts Centre in Mississauga.  Grand Opening ceremony for the Sandman Hotel in Oakville and seasonal client appreciation events at the Sandman Oakville and Signature in Toronto, private events for Ford and Armani Canada, just to name a few.
Stella Jurgen & Jazz Plazma’s repertoire and style is ideal for corporate special events, luncheons, seasonal parties, client appreciations, conferences, showcases as well as dinner audiences.
