Mayor Crombie’s one bag challenge

The arts community accepts Mayor Crombie’s one bag challenge in a big way.

Mississauga’s arts and culture community delivered groceries and more to Fairview Fire Station 101 destined for the Mississauga Food Bank..

Paul Damaso, Director of Mississauga’s Culture Division declared, “It’s obvious that anything is possible when you work together. The future of arts and heritage in Mississauga is very bright under your collective leadership.”

New Leader takes MAC!

October 5, 2016, Mississauga

The Mississauga Arts Council (MAC) is delighted to announce the beginning of a new era in the development of arts and culture in Mississauga with the selection of Mike Douglas as the new Executive Director of MAC. Mr. Douglas was serving as Executive Director on an interim basis while the thorough search for a permanent ED was underway. After the interviews of top candidates were concluded, Mike was the unanimous first choice for this pivotal position.

“We’re delighted,” said MAC Board President, Brian Crombie. “Mike has a marvelous knowledge of Mississauga, our diverse and emerging arts scene and he’s familiar with the City’s key decision makers.” Douglas’ resume covered a long career in television directing and recently he spent five years as founding editor/co-publisher of the arts and culture oriented MississaugaLife – Spirit of the City magazine.

“Creative, community minded and connected, combine that with his positive energy and communications talents and we feel fortunate to have Mike on board and steering the ship as we renew our progress towards creating greater appreciation, participation and support for the arts in Mississauga.” Crombie concluded.

Why take on such an exhausting job?

Asked and answered Douglas replied – “It’s about purpose, most of us crave a special purpose in life. And there is high purpose here in enabling more talents to succeed in our city. As Mayor Crombie has said, ‘our city shines when our artists shine’. And it’s true.”

What’s on top of his priority list? Douglas holds up a mask and smiles, we’re making magic he says, referring to the new Magical Masquerade Ball coming on Saturday October 29 it’s his first fundraiser for the 35 year old institution working for Mississauga’s changing arts scene.

Fiesta ng Kalayaan 2016

Translating to a “Celebration of Freedom” in Filipino, Fiesta ng Kalayaan is the largest family-oriented cultural event west of Toronto celebrating the Philippine culture. Entertainment will include performances by well-known local and international performers, dance troupes, bands, comedians and other artists. Filipino food, pastries and desserts will be on hand, and the trellises of Celebration Square will be adorned with arts and crafts from a variety of vendors from the Philippines.

Carassauga 2016

CARASSAUGA will come alive this weekend from May 27-29 in Mississauga! With 28 Pavilions showcasing over 70 countries throughout the festival displaying food, music, entertainment, fashion, art and history from many countries and their cultures. Founded in 1985, Carassauga will celebrate its 31st Anniversary this year!

Ride the MiWay and Carrassauga shuttle FREE between Pavilion locations with a Carassauga Passport! Children 12 and under also ride free while accompanied by an Adult with the Passport. A “Kids Zone” will be inside Indoor Soccer Arena at the Hershey Centre for children of all ages. Also enjoy FREE parking at all Pavilion locations! Carassauga Welcome and Information booths will be located at the Hershey Centre entrances. The festival schedule will be from Friday, May 27th till Sunday, May 29th at various Mississauga locations. MAC Coffee Night – Marbling Art EBRU

MAC Coffee Night – Marbling Art (EBRU)
Presentation by Hacer Atar-Ozcan!

FREE EVENT!

EBRU, a unique art form of Turkish Water Marbling, is created by drawing designs with dye on the surface of water, and then carefully placing paper on the water surface in order to absorb the dye; thereby, imprinting the dye pattern on the paper for a beautiful image!

Hacer Atar-Ozcan, a renowned traditional Turkish Marbling artist, will be covering:
– The history of Marbling Art presentation with detailed explanation of materials
– Understanding the Brush
– Understanding the Pigment

Hacer will also provide a DEMONSTRATION of abstract Marbling techniques, such Battal, Gelgit (Come and Go), Tarakli (Combing) and Wavy Flower techniques; Tulips, Daisys and Violets.

Cranberry Cocktail & Christmas Market

With the holidays just around the corner, the Mississauga Arts Council (MAC) family would like to cordially invite you to rejoice in the festive and joyous season by being inspired at its annual Cranberry Cocktail & Christmas Market. This year’s event  will take place on Friday, December 4, 2015.

Cranberry Cocktail – 4pm to 7pm

The Mississauga Arts Council is proud to announce that Juno Award Winner Liberty Silver will perform at MAC’s Cranberry Cocktail on December 4 in the Great Hall, 300 City Centre Drive.

Liberty Silver has won two Juno Awards, one for Best R&B/Soul Recording of the Year and the other for Best Reggae/Calypso Recording. Both were in 1985. She also performed an opening act for Bob Marley when he opened Madison Square Garden.

The event will also feature a once-in-a-lifetime intercultural performance featuring guitarist Rob Tardik, Carnatic violinist Subhadra Vijaykumar, and jazz pianist Dionne Grant, all performing alongside Silver.

In the evening we have our original signature event – the 34th Cranberry Cocktail which is a great opportunity to network, connect, collaborate and celebrate the holidays with creative industry, corporate supporters, community and most importantly our talented artists!

Tickets are $35 and include one FREE drink coupon and hors de oeuvres.
