Project: Rising Colours: A Mississauga Queer Arts Showcase
Vocalist and poet Angelo Brown used his Matchmaker MicroGrant to produce Rising Colours: A Mississauga Queer Arts Showcase in July 2026 at Christ First United Church. Rising Colours was a vibrant interdisciplinary community arts event that addressed the need for dedicated spaces for queer artists in Mississauga and the Peel Region as a whole. The showcase featured a lively open mic alongside artist and vendor tables spotlighting local queer creators and allies.
Marking Angelo’s debut as an event producer, the project served as a powerful hands-on learning experience in event management, promotion, and coordination. The showcase was a resounding success, selling out in advance and bringing together nearly 100 attendees to foster a thriving, connected local queer arts community.
“My project created a positive and safe environment for local LGBTQ community members and our allies to congregate. In the feedback form sent to all of the artists afterwards, many voiced gratitude and excitement for creating more local representation.”
