Project: Mississauga Double Book Launch – Non-Prophet by Qurat Dar and Precedence by Pujita Verma
Poet Qurat Dar used their Matchmaker MicroGrant to produce a double book launch in partnership with fellow poet Pujita Verma at Visual Arts Mississauga (VAM) on June 5, 2026. Hosted by poet and guest reader Sanna Wani, the evening celebrated the debut collections of both writers; Qurat’s Non-Prophet and Pujita’s Precedence. The intimate gathering brought together local poetry lovers for readings and a Q&A panel exploring poetic craft, ethics, and self-care, with attendees also enjoying a hands-on bookmark-making station run by VAM.
As local library spaces restrict book sales and independent bookstore options are limited, the MicroGrant provided the critical funding needed to secure an accessible venue in Mississauga, keeping local audiences from having to travel outside the city. The successful launch served as a vital cultural bridge, introducing attendees to VAM’s space while shining a well-deserved spotlight on local literary talent.
“As poets who grew up in the city and had our poetic beginnings here, it was really special for Pujita and I to have a book launch in Mississauga. We’re so thankful to MAC for making this event (and many of the poetry events in Mississauga) possible!”
